AI compute moves into homes with mini data centers
Ars Technica·
SPAN is piloting a novel approach to AI compute by deploying mini data centers, called XFRA nodes, directly into residential areas. These nodes, equipped with Nvidia GPUs and liquid cooling, aim to expand AI processing power by leveraging excess household electricity capacity. This distributed model offers a faster, more cost-effective alternative to traditional hyperscale data centers, potentially avoiding land use and water consumption issues. Homeowners hosting these nodes could receive subsidized electricity and internet, with SPAN managing the energy load and providing backup power.
