Ancient microbes found alive on Ötzi the Iceman
Ars Technica·
Scientists have discovered several species of cold-tolerant yeasts that have remained alive and potentially reproducing on the 5,300-year-old mummy of Ötzi the Iceman. These microbes were found on Ötzi's skin, in his stomach, and within meltwater from his body. Researchers cultured live yeast from these samples, indicating they have been with the mummy since shortly after his death. The carefully controlled, frigid environment where Ötzi is preserved appears to be ideal for these ancient organisms, preventing typical decomposition and allowing them to persist.
