Clarifai deletes 3 million OkCupid photos
TechCrunch·
AI platform Clarifai has reportedly deleted 3 million photos provided by OkCupid for facial recognition AI training, following an FTC investigation. The data, shared in 2014 by OkCupid executives who had invested in Clarifai, allegedly violated OkCupid's own privacy policies. The FTC investigated the matter starting in 2019 after a report revealed Clarifai's use of the images. While OkCupid and its parent company Match Group settled with the FTC last month without admitting wrongdoing, Clarifai's deletion of the data suggests the images were indeed used. The FTC has prohibited OkCupid and Match Group from misrepresenting data collection practices.
