Coal pollution significantly reduces solar power production
Ars Technica·
A new study reveals that aerosols from coal pollution are significantly undercutting solar power generation, reducing potential output by hundreds of terawatt-hours annually. Researchers utilized AI-analyzed satellite imagery and global solar facility data to estimate these losses, finding that over 6% of potential solar power was lost to aerosols in 2023 alone. This impact is particularly pronounced in regions with heavy coal reliance, such as China, where coal burning accounts for a substantial portion of aerosol-induced solar production losses. While improvements in coal plant efficiency are showing some benefit, the findings highlight coal as a direct impediment to solar energy's productivity.
