DNA identifies four more Franklin expedition crew
Ars Technica·
Archaeologists have identified four additional crew members from Captain Sir John S. Franklin's ill-fated 1846 Arctic expedition using DNA analysis. Three of the identified individuals served on the HMS Erebus, while the fourth was Petty Officer Harry Peglar of the HMS Terror. These findings, published in the Journal of Archaeological Science and Polar Record, add to the ongoing effort to name the 129 crew members who perished after their ships became icebound. The analysis compares DNA from recovered remains with samples from descendants, confirming earlier reports of desperate measures taken by the crew.
