Groundwater crisis can be reversed, study finds
Ars Technica·
A new study published in Science reveals that groundwater crises are reversible, analyzing 67 cases worldwide where water levels have recovered. The research identifies key strategies that led to these positive outcomes. A significant factor in 81% of cases was the introduction of alternative water sources, often involving large infrastructure projects or simpler connections to local rivers. Policy changes, such as pumping bans or fees for groundwater use, also played a crucial role in about half of the documented recoveries. Furthermore, nearly half of the successful cases involved artificial recharge methods to boost aquifer replenishment.
