Hershey's electric railway history in Cuba detailed
IEEE Spectrum·
The article explores the historical development and challenges of the Hershey Electric Railway in Cuba, built by the Hershey Chocolate Co. to secure sugar supply during WWI. Milton S. Hershey established a vertically integrated operation, including plantations, mills, and a unique electric railway system. Despite its initial success and philanthropic company towns, the railway faced issues like fuel costs and later, Cuba's chronic electricity shortages. While proposals exist to reactivate the line, citing potential environmental and geopolitical benefits, infrastructure and power reliability remain significant obstacles.
