Massive Landslide Triggered Tsunami in Alaska
Ars Technica·
A colossal landslide in Alaska's Tracy Arm fjord in August 2025 generated a tsunami reaching an astonishing 481 meters high, making it the second-highest ever recorded. The event, caused by a massive rock wedge detaching from a mountain face, was exacerbated by the retreat of the South Sawyer Glacier due to climate change. This glacial thinning destabilized the slope, leading to the catastrophic rockfall. Fortunately, the tsunami occurred early in the morning, avoiding casualties, but highlights the increasing risk of such 'megatsunamis' in glacial regions due to global warming.
