Natural protein protects GI tract from infection

Researchers at MIT have identified a natural protein, intelectin-2, that offers significant protection to the gastrointestinal tract. This protein, found on the body's mucosal surfaces, binds to sugars on cell surfaces, thereby strengthening the mucosal barrier. Intelectin-2 has demonstrated broad-spectrum efficacy against various harmful bacteria commonly found in the GI tract. The discovery by professor Laura Kiessling's team could lead to new therapeutic strategies for preventing and treating gastrointestinal infections by harnessing the body's own defense mechanisms. Further research aims to understand its full potential.
