Neanderthals used rhino teeth as tools
Ars Technica·
Archaeologists have discovered evidence suggesting Neanderthals utilized rhinoceros teeth as tools, a finding supported by experimental archaeology. Researchers examined numerous rhino teeth found at ancient European and Asian sites, noting markings consistent with use as hammers or anvils for stone tool creation. Obtaining modern rhino teeth for replication experiments proved challenging due to conservation laws, but zoo specimens were used. This research indicates Neanderthals possessed a wider range of tool materials than previously understood, incorporating durable animal parts into their toolkit for tasks like shaping stone and processing materials.
