New Fishing Tech Reduces Bycatch of Marine Life
Ars Technica·
Innovative fishing technologies are showing promise in significantly reducing the accidental capture, or bycatch, of non-target marine species like turtles, dolphins, and seabirds. While bycatch poses a threat to wildlife and a problem for fishermen, solutions like turtle excluder devices (TEDs) have proven highly effective, particularly in shrimp fisheries. These devices allow turtles to escape nets while retaining the target catch. Researchers are exploring other methods, including illuminated nets and simpler modifications, to address the multi-species and multi-gear nature of bycatch. The widespread desire among stakeholders to minimize bycatch offers hope for broader implementation of these conservation-focused technologies.
