Perseverance Rover Discovers Ancient Martian River Delta
Ars Technica·
NASA's Perseverance rover has utilized its ground-penetrating radar, RIMFAX, to detect a previously unknown, ancient river delta buried beneath the surface of Jezero Crater on Mars. This subsurface delta, estimated to be at least 85 to 90 meters thick, exhibits geological structures similar to Earth's river deltas, suggesting multiple episodes of sediment deposition. Scientists believe this discovery is a promising area for searching for signs of ancient microbial life, as the preserved carbonate-rich environment could potentially hold biosignatures.
