Powell: Current economy not 1970s "stagflation"
Reuters·T1·
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell stated that the current U.S. economic situation does not resemble the "stagflation" of the 1970s. Despite a recent spike in energy prices, partly due to the Iran war, Powell highlighted that current inflation is only one percentage point above the Fed's target, coupled with low unemployment. This assessment aims to reassure markets and the public that the economy is fundamentally different from the high inflation and stagnant growth period of decades past.
