Renewables dominate 2025 generating capacity additions
Ars Technica·
Renewable energy sources accounted for 86% of global generating capacity additions in 2025, with solar power leading the expansion. Approximately 1.4 gigawatts of solar capacity were installed daily, totaling 511 GW for the year. This surge brings total solar capacity to 2.4 Terawatts, surpassing wind and hydro. Despite a lower capacity factor, solar's rapid growth positions it to become the second-largest source of carbon-free electricity soon. Wind and hydro also saw significant capacity increases, contributing to a 16% overall growth in renewable capacity.
