Robotaxi firms hide remote operator intervention data
The Verge·
Several robotaxi companies have declined to disclose crucial information regarding the frequency of remote operator interventions in their self-driving vehicles. This data was requested by Senator Ed Markey's office as part of an inquiry into the role of remote assistance operators (RAOs). Seven companies, including Tesla, Waymo, and Amazon's Zoox, received letters seeking details on how often remote workers monitor and assist autonomous vehicles when they encounter difficulties. The lack of transparency raises questions about the reliability and safety of current autonomous driving technology and the extent to which human oversight is still required.
