Science Corp. prepares first human brain sensor implant
TechCrunch·
Max Hodak's Science Corporation is advancing its biohybrid brain-computer interface by enlisting a Yale neurosurgery chair for upcoming US human trials. The startup aims to implant a sensor that merges lab-grown neurons with electronics, initially targeting vision restoration for macular degeneration patients. This approach diverges from traditional methods, seeking to avoid the brain damage associated with metal probes. Science Corporation recently secured $230 million in funding, valuing the company at $1.5 billion. While Neuralink and others focus on electrical stimulation for conditions like ALS, Science Corp. pursues a more organic integration. The initial trial will test a sensor placed on the brain's surface, not directly implanted into tissue.
