Sharks overheat due to warming oceans
Ars Technica·
Great white sharks and other mesothermic species face a critical threat from rising ocean temperatures, potentially leading to overheating. These animals, which maintain warmer body temperatures than the surrounding water, require more energy to survive and are increasingly vulnerable as climate change warms the seas. This physiological challenge is compounded by declining food sources due to overfishing, forcing sharks to relocate to cooler waters or slow down their metabolism. Researchers are using sensors to understand these "hidden heat budgets" to aid conservation efforts, as shrinking habitats and increased competition for prey put these apex predators at risk.
