Solana's major consensus upgrade Alpenglow begins testing

Solana's core developer Anza has launched Alpenglow, a significant consensus overhaul, on a community test cluster. This upgrade aims to transition the blockchain from its current Proof-of-History and TowerBFT system to a faster architecture, potentially reducing transaction finality times to near real-time. The successful testing of the "Alpenswitch" mechanism, which allows validators to move to the new system, is a crucial step towards a mainnet rollout. Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko indicated that Alpenglow could be ready for the mainnet as early as the next quarter, provided testing proceeds smoothly.
