Supreme Court shields Cox from piracy liability
The Verge·
The Supreme Court has ruled that Cox Communications is not liable for copyright infringement related to pirated music. In a unanimous decision, the court found that the internet service provider neither encouraged nor facilitated illegal downloads by its users. This ruling overturns a previous jury decision that had found Cox responsible and ordered it to pay $1 billion in damages to record labels, including Sony Music. The case centered on allegations that Cox allowed numerous subscribers to illegally download copyrighted songs, but the Supreme Court's decision clarifies ISP responsibilities in copyright disputes.
