Uber Invests $300M in Rivian for Robotaxis
TechCrunch·
Uber is significantly expanding its autonomous vehicle strategy through a substantial investment and vehicle purchase agreement with Rivian. The ride-hailing giant will invest an initial $300 million and acquire 10,000 of Rivian's R2 robotaxis, with an option for 40,000 more. These vehicles are slated for deployment in San Francisco and Miami starting in 2028, exclusively on Uber's network. This move marks Uber's deepest involvement yet, with Rivian developing both the vehicle and the self-driving system. The partnership, however, presents considerable risks for Rivian, which is still constructing its Georgia factory and has already adjusted profitability targets due to autonomy development costs.
